FROM THE SHOW: STREETBEATS

The man behind the beats, Earl Palmer, shares stories about tap dancing as kid in New Orleans, his travels on the vaudeville circuit and his work creating the New Orleans sound with Fats Domino and Little Richard.

GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME: WITH EARL PALMER, JM VAN EATON, ADONIS ROSE, THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ ORCHESTRA

It's time to give the drummer some, with late New Orleans native Earl Palmer talking about his creative percussion for Fats Domino and Little Richard sessions; and conversation with Memphis rockabilly JM Van Eaton about backing Jerry Lee Lewis; plus rhythm and time-keeping in music from Elvis and Johnny Cash to Smokey Johnson and Slim Gaillard. Then a live set dedicated to the soul, funk and jazz of New Orleans drummer James Black with Adonis Rose and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.

THE OUTLAW POET AND THE CRAWFISH QUEEN: BILLY JOE SHAVER & YVETTE LANDRY

The late Texas singer-songwriter Billy Joe Shaver was a prolific composer who drew inspiration from his life experiences: turning horses to working in a sawmill; his relationship with religion and his family. All raw material for honing classic country songs, many of which are anthemic in the Outlaw Country music scene of yore. Then, the former Crawfish Queen of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, Yvette Landry, shares stories of coming to music and song-making later in life, and her work with the "Godfather of Swamp Pop," Warren Storm. Plus words and music from Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Marcia Ball and Fats Domino.

JOURNEYS IN LIFE AND MUSIC WITH RHONDA VINCENT & ALLISON RUSSELL

It's songs of solace and shelter, hope and joy as we visit with mandolin virtuoso Rhonda Vincent, from Greentop, Missouri, who grew up playing the bluegrass and country music circuit in her family's bluegrass band and now plays the Grand Ole Opry with her own band, the Rage. Then, Montreal-born, Nashville-based singer, clarinetist and banjo player Allison Russell, on her journey to healing from childhood trauma through travels, words and music. Plus songs for weathering Hurricane Ida's destructive route from the Gulf South to New York City by Allen Toussaint, Randy Newman and Fats Domino.

LOVE IS STRANGE WITH JUDY COLLINS AND JIM LAUDERDALE

The dead of winter has us pondering warmer times with the help of songs of love - lost and found. Whether it's from swooning crooners or heartbroken honky-tonkers, love has wedged itself prominently in the American songbook. We talk to two songwriters who specialize in matters of the heart: '60s folk chanteuse Judy Collins and Americana songmaker Jim Lauderdale, a.k.a. "The King of Broken Hearts." Plus we hear soulful sweet songs from the Pointer Sisters and the Four Tops, ballads of love on the rocks from George Jones and Tracy Chapman, and love confessions for "My Girl, Josephine" by Fats Domino and "Ophelia" by The Band. Join us for songs of love sad and happy, sexy and silly, careless and calculated on American Routes.

AFTER THE STORM: KATRINA AT 15

15 years ago the levees failed after Hurricane Katrina and covered 80% of New Orleans in water. The Federal flood left a human and ecological disaster in its wake. We take a look back at the catastrophe, recovery and renewed hope for the culture of the Crescent City with Dr. John, Irma Thomas, the Rebirth Brass Band and Allen Toussaint and archival audio from our first broadcast After the Storm in September 2005. image of Fats Domino's house in the Lower Ninth Ward, four months after Hurricane Katrina, 2005 by Ethan Miller/Getty Images

CREOLES AND COWGIRLS: CHARLIE GABRIEL & THE QUEBE SISTERS

We hit up Preservation Hall in the French Quarter for a potent dose of trad jazz, as bandleader and fourth-generation Creole musician Charlie Gabriel tells of his Caribbean roots, jazz funerals, and New Orleans' hybrid rhythms. Then we head to the Lonestar state to hear the reworking of jazz into Texas swing, as played by the Quebe Sisters. The fiddling siblings tell of their sheltered upbringing outside Ft. Worth and their fiery baptism into western swing. Plus, we spin other pioneering Creoles--Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, and Fats Domino--and country & western greats from Bob Wills to Willie Nelson.

FAMILY GROOVE: REMEMBERING ART NEVILLE

We remember lost heroes of New Orleans music, beginning with Art Neville, founding member of The Meters and the Neville Brothers, who passed away at age 81 on July 22, 2019. We pay tribute to Art by revisiting our interviews with him and his brothers over the years, as the Nevilles tell stories of family life and their adventures in and beyond the city where they learned their craft. Then, we remember the late Fats Domino with our favorite of the New Orleans piano man's Imperial releases. And we hear the Fat Man's reflective side in a rare 2007 conversation with him about escaping Hurricane Katrina's flood waters and how his faith saw him through. Veteran blues harp player Billy "Boy" Arnold tells of South Side Chicago's early rhythm & blues scene, recording with Bo Diddley, and his view of Fats Domino's role in pushing black music across the color line.

LOVERS, BROTHERS AND OTHERS: MAKING SWEET MUSIC TOGETHER

Music made by couples, families and siblings often has a special quality. The same is true of people who have a musical attraction to one another: Lennon and McCartney, or Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew. Country traditionalist and mandolin player Marty Stuart was 12 years old when he met country chanteuse Connie Smith at a road show in his native Mississippi. Decades later Marty and Connie were married. They talk about their spring-fall relationship and making music together as "old souls." We'll talk to Joan Baez about writing for Bob Dylan and her singing his songs. Plus the Black Keys tell us how they teamed up, as did real brothers Trombone Shorty and James Andrews. We'll also hear from the Cajun married duo of Marc and Ann Savoy.

DELBERT MCCLINTON AND BUCKWHEAT ZYDECO

American Routes goes from Texas roadhouses to Zydeco dancehalls with two men known for their live performances, Delbert McClinton and Buckwheat Zydeco. Harmonica player, vocalist and songwriter Delbert McClinton has gone from backing up Jimmy Reed and Howlin' Wolf in the 1960s to top 40 success. But he never stops delivering what his fans want-sweaty, country-tinged rhythm and blues shows. Stanley Dural, Jr., better known as Buckwheat Zydeco, grew up hearing traditional accordion from his father from the very beginning, but preferred soul, funk and R&B. Now he's known for mixing them all together for high-energy shows across southern Louisiana and the world. All this plus great music from Lightnin' Hopkins, Emmylou Harris, Fats Domino and more.
