FROM THE SHOW: COUNTRY CROSSOVER

Clinch Mountain native and bluegrass pioneer Ralph Stanley recalls his early days in music and demonstrates his banjo frailing style with the first song he ever learned to play.

FROM THE SHOW: RICKY SKAGGS & LOUISIANA RED

Mandolinist and singer Ricky Skaggs grew up in Kentucky, playing with Ralph Stanley and the Country Gentlemen, then recorded a string of country hits in the 1980s. He never strayed far from his bluegrass roots, though. Skaggs talks about bluegrass great Bill Monroe, playing "Big Mon," his tribute to Monroe, and "What Would You Give In Exchange For Your Soul?," Monroe's first recording. Skaggs discusses balancing Nashville country with bluegrass, and demonstrates how Monroe's manolin style evolved as he integrated new influences and himself became an influence on rock and roll.

FROM THE SHOW: AMERICAN ROUTES GOES TO THE MOVIES

Texas-born musician T-Bone Burnett has played with Bob Dylan and served as a producer with Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, and Gillian Welch. Burnett discusses here his work with the Coen Brothers on the soundtrack for the movie O Brother Where Art Thou. With historic material given new treatments by Ralph Stanley, Emmy Lou Harris, Gillian Welch, Chris Thomas King, and actor Tim Nelson, O Brother gives music the royal treatment in a way rare to Hollywood.
