NORTH AMERICAN ROUTES FROM SOUTH LOUISIANA TO CAPE BRETON WITH THE SAVOY-DOUCET CAJUN BAND AND BEOLACH

We’re rolling out New Orleans Creole and Cajun Francité and soul. We’ll hear music from The Meters, Kid Ory, and Carol Fran… plus the Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band live at the French Market in New Orleans. Then, we head to Cape Breton Island in Maritime Canada for a visit with fiddler Wendy MacIsaac of the band Beolach, along with other Nova Scotia Scots Gaelic classics… and finally some down home American folks.

PIEDMONT BLUES WITH JONTAVIOUS WILLIS & ANDREW ALLI AND THE STOOGES BRASS BAND LIVE FROM NEW ORLEANS

We’re digging into the Piedmont blues, a rich style that mixes ragtime, old-time country music, jazz, gospel, hollers, and historic popular songs. A conversation and music with two younger players in the tradition: guitarist/singer Jontavious Willis from rural Greenwood, GA and harmonica player Andrew Alli from Richmond, VA. Plus music by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee, Elizabeth Cotten, Cannonball Adderly and Bob Wills. Then it’s the Stooges Brass Band from New Orleans in a live studio session.

SUMMER SOUNDS-BEING & STAYING COOL

This summer we try to be and stay…cool. Leading our in-crowd is the late pianist and jazz radio host Ramsey Lewis in conversation about blending the blues he heard on the Chicago streets with gospel music from home to create a cool version of jazz. We’ll also hear cool words and music from Tom Waits, Dr. John, Aretha Franklin, Albert Murray, and Oscar Brown, Jr. Plus a visit to North Carolina’s historic Black Seabreeze Beach.

DOWNHOME MUSIC OF ARHOOLIE RECORDS

We’re celebrating Arhoolie Records, the Berkeley, CA based record company devoted to roots music: blues and jazz, Mexican and Cajun, gospel and country. Join us for a live concert, from the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse, with the pioneering label’s many admirers including Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal, Michael & David Doucet of Beausoleil, New Orleans’ Treme Brass Band and sacred steel masters, the Campbell Brothers. We’ll also chat with Arhoolie’s founder, the late Chris Strachwitz about his passion for American roots music on record.
