NEW ORLEANS JAZZ CLARINET, MANDE SONGS & LOUISIANA ZYDECO LIVE

It's New Orleans jazz clarinet in street parades and clubs. We'll hear clarinet in the hands of past and present legends: George Lewis, Sidney Bechet, Dr. Michael White and Aurora Nealand, plus a conversation with a sometime New Orleans clarinet virtuoso, Evan Christopher. Then, a live cultural exchange between French Louisiana and West Africa with singer, percussionist and dancer Sidiki Conde from Guinea and zydeco accordionist, cultural historian and sometime alligator wrangler, Bruce "Sunpie" Barnes.

CLUB HOPPING II

Come along for a jaunt around New Orleans, in this archive edition of American Routes, as we visit great nightclubs and tune in to live local music over two decades. We visit the legendary Tipitina's, an Uptown institution that showcased homegrown talent like Professor Longhair, James Booker, Dr. John, and the Neville Brothers, and is now run by the funk band Galactic. Then, a visit to the long-closed Donna's Bar & Grille in the French Quarter, where clarinetist Evan Christopher and piano player Tom McDermott made waves with their unique blend of New Orleans, Caribbean, and classical music. Plus a recipe for a classic New Orleans cocktail, the Sazerac, and music for late night parties or hangover mornings.

AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE WITH SUMMER SOUNDS FROM FRENCH QUARTER FEST

This week, we celebrate the cultural minglings in New Orleans with a visit to the 2019 French Quarter Festival: a free, homegrown, four-day annual event featuring a vast array of local music presented on stages throughout the city's oldest neighborhood. We'll hear from Soul Queen Irma Thomas, the late piano patriarch Ellis Marsalis, and the Preservation Hall Brass Band. We'll also catch the French-Creole jazz of Don Vappie and Evan Christopher, Cajun dance music from Bruce Daigrepont, vaudeville and gospel from Topsy Chapman and Solid Harmony, Klezmer-funk fusion from the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars and traditional jazz from Dejan's Olympia Brass Band. The Festival plans its return for April 2021. _Photo by Zack Smith Photography, Courtesy of French Quarter Festivals, Inc._
