EASTER PARADE & PASSOVER: MUSIC FOR HOLY DAYS AND HOLIDAYS

For Easter: a live bluegrass set from Del McCoury from the National Folk Festival and a conversation with Chicago gospel giants the Highway Q.C.'s. We'll give the chocolate rabbits, colored eggs, Jesus and believers their due in songs by Woody Guthrie, the Staple Singers, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Bob Dylan. Each year, the NEA recognizes traditional artists for their excellence and contributions to our nation's heritage. It's the highest award in the traditional arts. This year's honorees include: Filipino rondalla musician Tagumpay Mendoza De Leon; Osage ribbon worker and ceramicist Anita Fields; documentary filmmaker and preservationist Tom Davenport; Louisiana's Winnsboro Easter Rock gospel ensemble; Hill Country blues drummer and guitarist Cedric Burnside; Puerto Rican mundillo lace weaver Nellie Vera; Irish flute and whistle maven Joanie Madden; Chicago tap dancer Reginald "Reggio the Hoofer" McLaughlin; and the Mexican American band from East Los Angeles, Los Lobos. THANKSGIVING 2021 WITH THE NATIONAL HERITAGE FELLOWS

It's time for gathering with family and friends in thanksgiving. Join us to celebrate the National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellows. Each year, the NEA recognizes traditional artists for their excellence and contributions to our nation's heritage. It's the highest award in the traditional arts. This year's honorees include: Filipino rondalla musician Tagumpay Mendoza De Leon; Osage ribbon worker and ceramicist Anita Fields; documentary filmmaker and preservationist Tom Davenport; Louisiana's Winnsboro Easter Rock gospel ensemble; Hill Country blues drummer and guitarist Cedric Burnside; Puerto Rican mundillo lace weaver Nellie Vera ; Irish flute and whistle maven Joanie Madden; Chicago tap dancer Reginald "Reggio the Hoofer" McLaughlin; and the Mexican American band from East Los Angeles, Los Lobos. PRESERVATION HALL PERSEVERES & GUITARIST ALBERT LEE

We are live in New Orleans at Preservation Hall for the nouveau stylings and hybrid sounds that have been cooking up in the historic jazz hub including funky new grooves from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, paired with singer Tom Waits, bluegrasser Del McCoury and New Orleans hoodoo rocker Dr. John. Then, we look back to post-war England with session guitarist Albert Lee who grew up hearing American music on the radio and eventually crossed the pond to play rock & roll stateside. Plus, we explore the roots of rock with blues harpist Little Walter, western swingers Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys and rockabilly picker Carl Perkins.

MEMORIAL DAY WITH THE NEA HERITAGE FELLOWS

This Memorial Day, we celebrate the artists and artisans keeping American roots cultures alive. Every year since 1982 the National Endowment for the Arts has presented Heritage fellowships-- America's highest honor in "folk & traditional arts." We hear music from past award recipients including swamp boogie chanteuse Carol Fran and bluegrass crooner Del McCoury. And we go live to the 2017 NEA Heritage concert for songs and stories from Puerto Rican percussionist Modesto Cepeda, Hawaiian slack-key guitarist Cyril Pahinui, conjunto accordionist Eva Ybarra, Appalachian buckdancer Thomas Maupin, Danish accordionist Dwight Lamb, Piedmont blues harp player Phil Wiggins, folk music teacher Ella Jenkins, Alaskan weaver Anna Brown Ehlers and Armenian metalworker Norik Astvatsaturov.

NEW ORLEANS' PRESERVATION HALL PERSEVERES & REMEMBERING HUGH MASEKELA

We are live in New Orleans at Preservation Hall for the nouveau stylings and hybrid sounds that have been cooking up in the historic jazz hub since second-generation director and bass player Ben Jaffe took the helm. We hear funky new grooves from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, whose band members range from 20-somethings to an octogenarian. And we witness the sonic chemistry when the band is paired with singer Tom Waits, bluegrasser Del McCoury and New Orleans hoodoo rocker Dr. John. Plus, we remember the late South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, who fused Afrobeat, bebop, pop and the songs of his homeland as a leading voice in the fight against apartheid.

THE 2017 NATIONAL HERITAGE FELLOWSHIP CONCERT AND CELEBRATION

For this Thanksgiving weekend special, we serve up a heaping course of sonic delights and give thanks to the artists and artisans keeping American roots cultures alive. Every year since 1982 the National Endowment for the Arts has presented Heritage fellowships -- America's highest honor in "folk & traditional arts." We hear music from past award recipients including swamp boogie chanteuse Carol Fran and bluegrass crooner Del McCoury. NEA HERITAGE FELLOWSHIP CONCERT 2016

American Routes celebrates Thanksgiving weekend with a sonic cornucopia from National Endowment for the Arts' Heritage Fellows -- recipients of America's most prestigious award in folk & traditional arts. We'll hear music and conversation from past Fellows: bluegrass picker Del McCoury, rockabilly Wanda Jackson, sacred steel guitarists, the Campbell Brothers, and late blues singer Koko Taylor. The 2016 Fellows, many performing live in Washington, include: Mardi Gras Indian Chief Monk Boudreaux, Irish accordionist Billy McComiskey and Mexican-American singer Artemio Posadas. NEA HERITAGE AWARDS

It's a tradition of it's own by now! Each year, American Routes celebrates Thanksgiving weekend with words and music from the National Heritage Fellows Concert in Washington DC. Since 1982, the National Endowment for the Arts has presented the fellowships. It's America's highest award in Folk & Traditional Arts. We'll hear a mix of this year's fellows live from the stage as well as great recordings of those from years gone by: The Holmes Brothers, Doc Watson, Treme Brass Band, Michael Doucet with Beausoleil, Boozoo Chavis, Flaco Jimenez, Mavis Staples, Del McCoury, John Cephas & Phil Wiggins, Andy Statman and many more. Blues and jazz, Cajun and zydeco, Tejano and klezmer, bluegrass and gospel as well as Native American voices, make a cornucopia of sounds and stories for the holiday!

SONGS OF THE EXPATRIATES: RICHARD THOMPSON & ZACHARY RICHARD

This week on American Routes, we'll talk to the beloved electric and eclectic, folk rocker songwriter and guitarist Richard Thompson. An advocate for British lyric and music tradition in new settings with refashioned traditional songs and stories like "Matty Groves" and "Tam Lin," Thompson evolved from playing in the seminal late 1960s English folk-rock band, Fairport Convention to his present day role as an in-demand guitarist and songwriter. Now based in Los Angeles, Richard's career of memorable songs and epicure guitar is heard in a variety of genres from Cajun and country to rock and pop. Thompson's iconic songs include "Meet on the Ledge," "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," "Dimming of the Day" and "Tear Stained Letter." Among the artists who have recorded his work are Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Del McCoury and R.E.M.
Then we'll visit with accordion-man Zachary Richard about growing up in French-speaking South Louisiana but needing to go to France and Quebec to realize the significance of the Cajun culture into which he was born. Zachary Richard's 40-year career reflects new ways with old Cajun waltzes and two steps, the R & B glow of near by New Orleans, American folk rock mixed with swamp pop, and elegiac new songs that draw on continental French, Quebecois and Acadian sources. Richard's recent "Le Fou" may be the first Americana record made largely in the French of his homeland: South Louisiana's Cajun country.

THE 2010 NATIONAL HERITAGE FELLOWSHIP CONCERT AND CELEBRATION

Each year, the National Endowment for the Arts recognizes citizens for their contributions to our nation's traditional arts. On this Thanksgiving weekend, we'll join the 2010 honorees, recorded live in concert from Washington, D.C., including bluegrass bandleader Del McCoury, Ghanaian drum master Yacub Addy and fiddler Jim "Texas Shorty" Chancellor. Plus music and words from an array of past and present National Heritage Fellows, from Doc Watson to John Lee Hooker.

JULY 4TH WITH PONDEROSA STOMP, DEL MCCOURY BAND & PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND

This Fourth of July, American Routes celebrates our nation's birthday with two live concerts of all-American music. We'll stop by the Ponderosa Stomp, dedicated to the "unsung heroes of rock n' roll" for a good dose of rockabilly, soul, country and R&B classics, done by the originators themselves. Then it's down the street to Preservation Hall, where bluegrass masters the Del McCoury Band mix it up with the Crescent City's own purveyors of traditional jazz, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. So fire up the grill, pull out your lawn chair and turn up the radio for American Routes.

HARVEST TIME

It's the time of the season when we gather together to celebrate the harvest... and maybe reflect on the work we've done--all in words and music. It's also getting cold, and it's a good time to be indoors by the radio to hear autumnal sounds and colors in music. Our guests include bluegrass traditionalist Del McCoury, who speaks about his days on the farm and logging the forests of Pennsylvania, as well as his bluesy "high lonesome" sound. Popular singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant reflects on the role of music in the seasons of her life and tells about her recording "The House Carpenter's Daughter". Plus sounds and wiffs of the "angels' share" from the barrel room of the Old Forrester Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. We'll post the scratch and sniff soon.
